Just A Programmer

My CV appeared on my blog today (over there on the right hand side).

I had to have a think about whether I could maintain the simple sobriquet "Programmer" given that I have spent some considerable time both as an engineering manager and as a consultant.

At the end of the day, I don't believe there is any such thing as a consultant. You have a skill and you provide consultancy based on that skill. Everyone with a skill can be a consultant. My skill is principally software engineering, both the performing thereof and the leadership of teams who are performing thereof, so I can provide consultancy on that. I have, secondarily, some reasonably amount of ground knowledge on IT matters in general, as picked up during my life as a programmer, and I have provided consultancy on that basis too, but I'm still, basically, a Programmer.

I'm also not sure there's any such thing as a manager either, though I may be at odds with a large part of the world over this. There are such things as management skills, and very important they are too, but they vary from domain to domain and are not necessarily transferable. The best chiefs are not just also indians, willing to roll their sleeves up and get stuck in when necessary, but are also the best indians in the tribe itself (if you get my meaning :) ).

So I'm sticking to Programmer, and although I've put my CV up if you really want to know what I can do in that department then the best thing to do is to look at my work, which is basically QuSheet. Ok, I know you can't do that yet, but when it's ready download it with an evaluation licence and play with it. Barring two small routines which I got free from the internet the whole thing is my own work.

All the best

Richard
